Terbinafine Tablet is a strong medicine and a type of medication known as antifungals. It is available in tablet form and is utilized to cure many fungal infections of the scalp, body, groin, feet, fingernails, and toenails. This prescription tablet attacks fungal infections at their roots, so it is very effective in fighting off chronic fungal growth.

It's worth mentioning that terbinafine is not effective on infections caused by viruses or bacteria.

The medicine takes effect by killing the fungus causing the infection, thereby allowing normal skin and nails to return.

    Uses of Terbinafine

Terbinafine tablets affect a broad variety of fungal infections, including:

    • Onychomycosis (fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails)
    • Jock itch
    • Athlete's foot
    • Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body)
    • Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm)

It's important to mention that terbinafine only treats fungal infections and not bacterial or viral ones.

Instructions on How to Take Terbinafine Tablets

    • Patients should take terbinafine tablets as directed by their physician.
    • The tablets may be swallowed whole with water, with or without food.
    • It's advisable to take the pills at the same time daily in order to keep a steady level in the blood.
    • For nail fungal infections, treatment can take months. It is important to follow the whole course even when symptoms are alleviated.
    • If a dose has been missed, take it as soon as possible unless the next dose would be almost due. It should be skipped and regular dosing resumed in that case. Taking additional tablets will not have a harmful effect but can cause side effects such as pain in the stomach or dizziness.

Medical History: Inform your physician of your medical history prior to beginning terbinafine, including kidney disease, immune system disorders, or lupus.

Monitoring: Periodic visits to a physician are necessary to observe developments and possible side effects. Blood tests can be required to examine for undesirable effects. Patients must alert the doctor if the signs and symptoms intensify or fail to improve.

Liver Issues: The medication may also lead to liver problems, so patients should consult their doctor about this medicine.

Sun Protection: As terbinafine may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, using sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds is advisable.

Limit Alcohol: Excess alcohol consumption can increase your risk for significant negative consequences.

Patients should discuss all other medications, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements, with their doctor before use.

    How Terbinafine Tablet Works

    • Terbinafine Tablet is an allylamine antifungal that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal infections. It inhibits the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is critical in the formation of the fungal cell wall. Inhibition causes the reduction of ergosterol and the accumulation of squalene, making the fungal cell wall weaker.
    • The drug is extremely lipophilic, with accumulation in skin, nails, and adipose tissue. It is orally absorbed well but has only 40% bioavailability as it is metabolized during first-pass. It achieves peak blood concentration within approximately 2 hours.
    • Terbinafine has strong binding with plasma proteins, primarily serum albumin. The tablet is excreted primarily via urine, with the rest coming out in faeces. Although its half-life of action is around 36 hours, it will stay in the skin and fat tissue for much longer periods.
