Chlorhexidine oral mouthwash is a mouthwash that is often used to cure gingivitis (inflamed, red gums).  It kills some of the bacteria in your mouth. The most frequent side effects are tooth discolouration, additional tartar formation on your teeth, and a bitter mouthfeel. Severe side effects are unusual but can involve allergic reactions. See your dentist often while you are taking this medication, at least once every six months, to have stains and tartar removed.

How do I take chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash?

What are the instructions on my prescription label? Do not take chlorhexidine gluconate in larger or smaller amounts or for a longer time than recommended by your doctor.

    • Rinse your mouth twice a day after you brush your teeth.
    • Use chlorhexidine gluconate with the measuring cup provided by your pharmacist. Swish the medicine in your mouth for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
    • Do not mix water into the oral rinse. Do not rinse your mouth with water or other mouthwashes immediately after using chlorhexidine gluconate.
    • Chlorhexidine gluconate can cause a bitter or unpleasant taste in your mouth. Do not rinse your mouth to get rid of the taste after taking the medication. You can rinse the medicine away and decrease its effectiveness.
    • Your symptoms may get better before your gingivitis is fully gone. Chlorhexidine gluconate will not cure a viral or fungal infection like cold sores, canker sores, or oral thrush (yeast infection).
    • See your dentist at least once every 6 months for routine tooth and gum care.
    • Keep chlorhexidine gluconate away from heat and moisture. Store it at room temperature.

What are the advantages of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash?

Chlorhexidine mouthwash has a list of advantages that include the following:

    • Your Chlorhexidine mouthwash, which causes gum disease, can be killed using chlorhexidine. It is hence a strong antibacterial mouthwash. Your dentist can prescribe it to cure bleeding, swelling, and inflammation of gingivitis.
    • Chlorhexidine creates a protective coating over your gums and teeth during dental procedures, protecting against plaque for as long as 12 hours. This helps to treat or prevent gum infection and oral infection. If you have a sore throat or mouth ulcer, it also soothes your discomfort.
    • Evidence also exists for the adjunct short-term use of chlorhexidine to control dental plaque, reduce clinical manifestations of dry socket and gingivitis, and decrease bacterial aerosolisation.
